The Heart Of The Tao: Monastery Of Self Mastery is situated atop Mount Shadforth in Denmark, Western Australia.
It is a 50 acre property set 700m above sea level and is surrounded by an ancient Karri forest on all sides. It is an extraordinary place to spend time, taking in the scenery of the ocean which can be seen from the property, walking through the 8km of forest tracks intimately hidden away throughout or practising any one of the many various disciplines that are studied here by the Monks and Residents.
A large 2 car garage has been converted into a gym for the purpose of Kung Fu & Personal Training.
Located on the property are many private and at-first-difficult-to-spot areas that are perfect settings for chi-gung and tai-chi. Surrounded by the breathing forest they allow an intimate feel as ones body gently learns to slow down and simply, move and breathe.
The entire property is fed by multiple dams which means there is always fresh drinking water available and the many power points situated about means that even the more remote locations which currently house a converted-living bus and two caravans are fully self sufficient homes. In the same area there is a hot-outdoor shower and large outdoor toilet block.
In the Orchard there are 160 different types of fruit and nut trees that provide a huge harvest every year, providing naturally grown and certified organic produce. Many people who come to train at the Public Classes take home arms full of fruit every time they leave and children love to go fruit and nut picking while the parents participate in some form of training.
The main house remains open for people to use during the day, giving access to a bath, a toilet, a bathroom and a shower. The balcony that runs the length of the house looks out over Denmark Inlet and the surrounding Karri forest.
The Heart Of The Tao: Monastery Of Self Mastery has been established to provide a Sanctuary for people who need a place to cultivate. It is kept free of concern and is isolated enough to provide people with the space they need to breathe and yet it is only a 7 minute drive to the center of the beautiful Denmark Town.
The Monastery is continually organised and maintained by its Residents so that it can provide the valuable service of instructing people in Taoism, Buddhism, Zen and Mysticism. The Spiritual Disciplines of these varied traditions all benefit from having a designated space in which to practise which is the main reason for the existence of the Monastery.
As a center for Physical, Mental & Spiritual Cultivation we have the function of not holding to any particular religious views but instead hold only to the heartfelt wisdom and peace of mind that is gained through the practise of the many various forms of discipline from the above mentioned religious and lifestyle traditions.
The Abbot selflessly maintains the space for people to use, whether they use it for getting fit or losing weight at one end of the scale, practising to become Master Martial Artists at the other, or learning to develop an inner balance from Meditation and Tai Chi discipline somewhere in the middle, The Heart Of The Tao: Monastery Of Self Mastery welcomes all who would sincerely look to investigate such a way of life.
"We only hope to provide a space in which people can learn to better themselves and improve their capacity for fulfilled living" - MJA

We would like to make it known that it is our aim to eventually become established as a Recognised Charitable Organisation in order to secure the survival of our tradition and way of life here at this beautiful property in Denmark, Western Australia. We are very aware that this is a momentous task and we are just as aware that we are going to need the help of a lot of people in order to make this happen. If you think you are the kind of person who can help us in any way to secure the survival of the Warrior Monk Tradition then we would love to hear from you.
